Protocol Analysis

Decode, visualize, and understand CAN bus communication in real time

Understanding what is actually being communicated on a CAN bus requires more than capturing raw frames. Helix combines a full database editor with real-time signal decoding and multi-axis chart visualization — letting you see physical values like temperature, pressure, and RPM the moment they appear on the bus.

Key Capabilities

What Helix brings to the table for protocol analysis.

1

CAN FD support

Full support for CAN FD frames up to 64 bytes with BRS (Bit Rate Switch) and ESI (Error State Indicator) flag handling.

2

Real-time signal charts

Visualize decoded signals on multi-axis line charts with configurable time windows, auto-fit scaling, and LTTB downsampling.

3

Built-in database editor

Create, edit, import, and export signal database files directly in Helix with support for signals, value tables, multiplexing, and attributes.

4

Gauge widgets

Display key signals on radial (speedometer-style) or linear (bar-style) gauges for at-a-glance monitoring.

Common Challenges

Problems engineers face with protocol analysis — and why they matter.

1

Signal complexity

CAN signals use a wide variety of encodings — different byte orders (Intel/Motorola), signed and unsigned integers, IEEE floats, and arbitrary scaling factors. Getting the decoding wrong means incorrect physical values that can lead to dangerous misinterpretation.

2

Multi-signal correlation

Understanding system behavior requires analyzing relationships between signals from different CAN messages simultaneously. Viewing signals one at a time makes it nearly impossible to spot timing dependencies or causal relationships.

3

Unknown protocols

Not every CAN network comes with existing documentation. When no database file exists, engineers need a way to iteratively build message definitions while watching live data — a workflow most tools do not support.

4

High-speed data rates

CAN FD at 8 Mbit/s generates thousands of frames per second. Plotting this volume of data in real time overwhelms most charting tools, causing lag, dropped frames, or browser crashes.
